Brightstar’s Emer Timmons only European woman to be recognized as one of the ‘21 Leaders for the 21st Century’ 2017

Emer Timmons, Chief Marketing Officer and President of Strategic Sales has been named an honouree at the ’21 Leaders for the 21st Century’ event.

London, 8th May 2017: Today, Irish business woman Emer Timmons, Chief Marketing Officer and President of Strategic Sales for Brightstar and member of the UK’s Women’s Business Council, has been named an honouree at the ’21 Leaders for the 21st Century’ event.  Each year ’21 Leaders for the 21st Century’, pays tribute to those women and men who have made an outstanding impact on gender equality around the globe. Emer, born in Ireland, is the only European woman to be recognized as an honoree in 2017.

Previous years’ honorees have included American playwright and activist, Eve Ensler, American attorney and women’s rights activist, Sandra Fluke, media guru and CEO of PBS, Pat Mitchell and many other influential leaders from the political, business, academic, legal and health arenas. Fellow honourees this year include Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Ambassador Alice Dear and Rosa Rios, the 43rd Treasurer of the United States.

Lori Sokol, PhD., Executive Director of Women’s eNews, says the event taps into the wisdom and achievements of high-performing leaders from around the world and recognizes the work they have done to move the needle forward on gender equality.

“From Congresswomen and Professors to acclaimed Journalists and Managing Directors, this event puts the spotlight on leaders that are making significant steps forward for women and girls. Emer is an exemplar of this mantra, and an excellent champion for women in business and technology. She has done some fantastic work as part of the UK government’s Women’s Business Council* and the Men as Change Agent (MACA) initiative in the UK,” says Dr. Sokol.

Emer, who was the Women in IT Awards ‘Woman of the Year 2015’, says she is delighted with the accolade that brings women’s rights to the fore.

Emer says, “I have clear thoughts on combatting gender inequality in the workplace, particularly in the UK tech industry where women are still vastly under-represented.

“I expressed my views recently speaking at the Women4Tech Summit at Mobile World Congress 2017. Here I helped people face the facts – a recent McKinsey report said that bridging the gender gap in work could add £150 billion to the UK’s annual GDP by 2025. So why isn’t there more urgency to get more women into the UK tech industry – an industry that is a truly troubling case study for disparity? I will continue to do my part in ensuring more intelligent, deserving women are securing their place around boardroom tables,” says Emer.

Emer Timmons’ credentials include:

  • Member of Women’s Business Council since 2013
  • Chair of the Men as Change Agents since 2016. Later this year, the MACA board will release a sponsorship toolkit to FTSE 250 CXOs aimed at supporting the development of talented women across their organizations
